Erhu Piece

April 27, 2012

Here’s one of the first pieces I made after a nine year gap (in 2003), as you will see I was trying out a bunch of different styles.  This is purely using Chinese instruments and is attempting to apply a Renaissance style to it.

1989, proper guitar, proper studio.

Is it better?  Can’t tell, it’s well played and it’s different.  I gave up the bass which I was pretty good at in favour of the guitar.  A more clinical rendition perhaps, with correct timing that renders it less naive.  You decide.

Ahoy!

30 years since I wrote it so thought I’d post my first single, recorded 1983 aged 17 for £50, released the following year under the name “AED”.  Got played by John Peel, sold 17,000 copies.

Side A: “Infer Ships Sink”, indie prog folk?

MP3

Side B: “Emporium Halls Pt. 4″, layered slowed down birdsong.

Svalbard C

December 17, 2011

Here’s the softer Svalbard, edited, not part of Svalbard B or Svalbard LP.  It’s the other bits.  I wasn’t going to publish this but I am quite drunk and now it seems appropriate.

24 – Altiplana

October 2, 2011

Here’s a piece from when I first started making music again after a 9 year gap in 2003… at this point I was still deliberately trying to please people but tucked this piece away at the back of an album under my pseudonym Lex Nasa.

In hindsight it seems like a bridge between the indie 80s and 90s and what I’m doing now, whilst kind of obvious, it does reveal some kind of future intent, even if that intent at the time was to be a trip-hop Steve Reich.

The purpose of this blog is not to edify me, it’s somewhere to share the things I’ve done that I like, regardless of whether they contribute to a  positive perception of me or not.  Dirty laundry, skeletons in closets, badgers in gloves.

I’ve made some truly awful music over the years but I think this piece has some merit.

23 – Water Mark/Margin

October 2, 2011

Here I selected and edited other people’s music for a contemporary dance performance for the first time.   The choreographer is my long time collaborator John Utans and the company is the Beijing Dance Academy.  I did this a couple of years ago.

I haven’t obtained permission for any of the music here for this blog but I think I’ve done them justice.  If you want to know the names of individual tracks, email me.  Enjoy!  The starting song is not as obvious as it initially seems.

Spitsbergen

September 23, 2011

Here’s a three track single, two from the short version of “Svalbard” and a third new edit from the long version… enjoy!

A reprocessing of a 36 second hurdy gurdy sample from Wikipedia… re-tuned, stretched and arranged in multiple layers with some appropriate reverberation.

A stretched out recording of the Welsh Triple Harp, the title means “Farewell to Wales”, performed by Llio Ryhdderch (the finest triple harp player of her generation) from her album “Melangell” on the Fflach Tradd label.
