24 – Altiplana

Here’s a piece from when I first started making music again after a 9 year gap in 2003… at this point I was still deliberately trying to please people but tucked this piece away at the back of an album under my pseudonym Lex Nasa.

In hindsight it seems like a bridge between the indie 80s and 90s and what I’m doing now, whilst kind of obvious, it does reveal some kind of future intent, even if that intent at the time was to be a trip-hop Steve Reich.

The purpose of this blog is not to edify me, it’s somewhere to share the things I’ve done that I like, regardless of whether they contribute to a positive perception of me or not. Dirty laundry, skeletons in closets, badgers in gloves.

I’ve made some truly awful music over the years but I think this piece has some merit.

23 – Water Mark/Margin

Here I selected and edited other people’s music for a contemporary dance performance for the first time. The choreographer is my long time collaborator John Utans and the company is the Beijing Dance Academy. I did this a couple of years ago.

I haven’t obtained permission for any of the music here for this blog but I think I’ve done them justice. If you want to know the names of individual tracks, email me. Enjoy! The starting song is not as obvious as it initially seems.

A stretched out recording of the Welsh Triple Harp, the title means “Farewell to Wales”, performed by Llio Ryhdderch (the finest triple harp player of her generation) from her album “Melangell” on the Fflach Tradd label.

20 – Resin Fish Pinks

In 1983 aged 17 I wrote a song called “Infer Ships Sink”, 20 guitar parts, 2 recorders and 2 vocals (with lyrics using the cut up techniques of William S. Boroughs). Some of it is in 15/16 time. As “AED” I got it released in 1984, it got played by John Peel and sold 20,000 copies despite mostly scathing reviews.

By the time I was 24 I could actually play it and at 26 it was re-recorded and released again as “Infernal Ships Sink”, selling 3 copies and being played on the radio only once, in Belgium at 4 A.M., for which I received a cheque of 50 pounds.

So here is the demo version I did in 1988 for Vinyl Solution on my Fostex 160 four track recorder, but slowed down to a full two hours… and one minute.

This is my 6th version of this song, that’s bloody mindedness for you!

To paraphrase Marc Weidenbaum: if you slow down AED, you get Alan Morse Davies.
